Tips for Good Wedding Photography and Videography For First Look

Groom gets emotional at first look

As very experienced Melbourne Wedding Photography team, capturing the magical moment of the groom seeing his bride for the first time when she walks down the aisle is one of the most important tasks for us for all the weddings we shot.

It's the most beautiful scene you could ever imagine when you see a strong and tough man breaks into tears in front of million eyes when he watches the girl of his dream walks to him. It's simply the purest LOVE in the world.

However, nowadays, more and more couples decide to go for a First Look - seeing each other for the first time before the ceremony on their wedding day.

Although it's untraditional, people still do it for a few reasons. It's more intimate, more relaxed, and a lot more flexible, and of course, it's different. If you have a very tight schedule between the ceremony and reception, then you might well think about getting the first look.

First Look can be a good option for winter weddings as well. Sunset during that time of the year is very early, and timeframe for daylight is very short. It can get dark and cold even in the afternoon.

A First Look session will guarantee you have enough light and better conditions for a more comfortable & relaxed photoshoot and therefore getting better quality wedding photos.

Surprisingly, the first look will not ruin the walking in the aisle at all. A lot of grooms still cry even they had already seen the bride in the dress before the ceremony.

After documenting many couples during their first looks, we found some great ideas for how to get better First Look photos & video. And we'd love to share them with you if you are also planning a First Look on your wedding day:

Make it less staged

A First Look should be unstaged and organic. Find a quiet place for this private event. Get away from the crowd.

When the bride and groom and ready to do the First Look, just let it flow, be in the moment. The photographer and videographer should not interrupt or try to give too many directions. They should be discrete and far away. If there is too much intervention, it might start to become unnatural and awkward.

In this way, we can capture the best and purest reactions and emotions.

Do a Father-Daughter First Look

Believe it or not, a Father-Daughter first look could be even more dramatic than the one for the bride and groom. it's one of our favourite wedding moments to capture. No one in this world can love a girl more than her father. And a father getting his first glimpse of his princess will bring back him all the years of memories since she was a baby. It's a powerful moment, an emotional moment. It might even be the first time he realises his little girl has already grown up. We have witnessed a lot of happy tears during those times. Remember to get lots of tissues ready and leave time for touch ups for the makeup.

Use a blindfold

Using a blindfold can be a cool twist. It will add more suspense to the First Look. When people cannot see anything at all, their anticipation will be more. On the other hand, it looks fun. And to make it more hilarious, you can leave the blindfold on him for a little longer, and play with him a little bit before removing it and

A First Look Prank

We LOVE the First Look prank. The outcome has been outstanding every time.

Get one of the groom's best mates to dress up in a second-hand wedding gown and show up in front of the groom will blow him away with a BIG surprise!

The look of the fake bride bloke might have already been very funny. The reactions from the groom will just be epic when he had been expecting to see his partner in a beautiful dress.

Getting these moments captured on photographs and film will be one thing you would never regret in your life. Even after many years, a look back at this hilarious prank will always give you a big laugh. After the prank, the bride can either show up for the real first look or simply wait out to see him at the aisle.

Get an extra wedding photographer and videographer

The moment the groom and bride seeing each is so precious, getting an extra photographer and videographer can cover reactions from both as you wouldn't want to miss a tiny bit of it.

Although an experienced photographer can capture the whole event singlehandedly and still getting great results, there are a lot of benefits for having extra crews. A lot of things could happen during that short time. You don't realise how quickly it will end because you will be containing the nerves and excitements. So having well-recorded photos and video from multiple angles can help you re-live every bit of the special moment.

Use a lapel microphone.

Getting the emotional words recorded on video is very rewarding for this treasurable moment.

The First Look happens very fast. Both of you probably won't even remember what you said at the time because you will be just way too overwhelmed.

Having a professional lapel microphone on the groom is a great way to record those joyful whispers. Those words are invaluable. Because they are from your heart and pure.
